Samsung's smart monitor line-up has always been pretty interesting, and it's even more interesting, especially after a particular company's monitor was released that feels a bit lackluster... The Samsung Smart Monitor M8 might be something you should look at if you need something that fits in a small space and does almost everything you need.

Note: The power delivery from one USB-C port is actually 65W and not 45W. So, it should be enough power to charge up most if not all devices while connected.

@Benyamin Lorit ssshhhh! Don't tell Chris that I am looking to buy this. I will pair it with a M1 Macbook Air, an old Samsung Note 9 with a dead smashed screen as the DeX device and even as a TV for a small studio apartment I rent in a city I usually stay in a few days monthly for work. This is a perfect product for my use case!

    • Benyamin Lorit
      Benyamin Lorit

@Chris M what are you talking about? 😅 None of the use cases I presented mentioned a computer nor did I even suggest it as a main monitor for your desk setup. I specifically suggested use cases involving compact living & accommodations where the utility of a hybrid like this that works with everything and every OS can be fully employed. Also, this is Samsung, they have more than enough resources invested in TV's/monitors and them allocating a bit for a smaller hybrid category is nothing in the grand scheme of their operations.

@Chris M i didnt think I would use the features that mutch just bought it on a big discount at a price equal to regular 32 inch fhd screen, but oh boi it is ever useful. When I just want to quickly google somethin for homework I plug the periferals to it and its a fully functional browser. You can even tap it to see the material that is on your phone. It has built in streaming apps for the occasional chillin.

@Benyamin Lorit if it's a monitor, then just reach over and press the power button on the computer. As a tech fan, I'd prefer companies put their resources towards features that are useful to more than like 6 people

Samsung is doing it all wrong. They need to double the price and charge a third more to adjust the height. Monitors aren't supposed to be well-designed AND affordable.

    • Daren Halfpenny
      Daren Halfpenny

@showda KO's Yes. the Studio display IS better. IF it suits your use case scenario which, in my case, it absolutely does! I won't use anything less than a retina screen (whether 5k desktop or Macbook Pro). The M8 is not 'optimised' for use on a Mac for anything other than consuming content. As flawed as it might be, I would definitely pay the extra for the Studio Display over this because it makes my job a whole lot easier. As for alternatives to the Studio display, there's one. That's it. LG Ultrafine. The only alternative with a 218ppi pixel density. But for the extra £300, I'd still take the Studio Display.

    • derpy derp
      derpy derp

@Hugo Wells way to say "better display" in 5 different ways Resolution, Pixel density, blacks and brightness are all the same thing that go hand in hand in making it a better display. When I say better webcam you don't see me saying "wider angle, better lens, more aperture, more megapixels, better image quality" You know why I don't say that? Because it's all the damn same thing. You're cherry picking. Higher wattage power IS SOMETHING NEW THANK GOD. You've been repeating "better display for every comment as if people have disagreed. And speakers are all subjective you can measure it but that doesn't mean it'd better. Because I can put a huge driver and compare to someone software small driver and there's can easily outperform. Your first subjective argument. Wow build quality wattage power and display for 1300$ more. While the samsung m8 outperforms it in every other metric

    • Hugo Wells
      Hugo Wells

@derpy derp Higher resolution, higher pixel density, better colour accuracy, better black levels, higher brightness, higher wattage power pass through. Better speakers with a wider frequency range. All these things can an have been measured. That makes it a better monitor period. You may not need those things. You may not value those things. But it is s better monitor

@Carl Eze I don't play games that often, but when I do I like them to play well, and I wouldn't even consider a monitor with less than 120hz in the year 2022, especially if it doesn't have freesync. But for basic internet stuff and shit-posting on IRglo, 60hz is enough.

@Joonil Oh To be fair, every LTT host trys recalling specs and prices for the stuff in these videos off of the top of their head and very frequently gets things wrong. They also neglect to mention important details to the viewer and that ends up misrepresenting the product Idk I would rather have a 5-10 min longer review describing the product a lot better then having these fast-edit, off-the-cuff impression videos that often don't do much of value other than advertise the product and not really inform the consumer very well. I don't know why LMG started doing commercials with vague explanations, might as well officially partner with the company their sponsored by at that point instead of pretending to be non-biased and on the consumer's side

    • Joonil Oh
      Joonil Oh

And so filled with misinformation that could've been avoided by spending 2 minute's looking at samsung's site and the specs they list. It's 65W PD and $729 is the price for the colored models. The white model (which is the one they have) is $699.

Really neat product and software! On the other hand the idea of a smart monitor is irritating for the same reason smart TVs are annoying, I'd steer away from a smart monitor and just plug in a box to run whatever software. @Shasha The studio display has numerous obvious flaws (whoever it is at apple who hates normal monitor mounting solutions needs to get their head checked) but its such a different product to this one that It just doesn't make sense (imo) that its mentioned in every review of the m8. Also to adress other people who are like "would rather have plastic and get X feature", yeah obviously thats the trade off you're making. This one looks particularly flimsy when handled though.

Apple could do it way better. Honestly smart TVs are also overrated. Most of the time people don't even use the smart features. Getting a non smart TV would lower the costs and you could use an external media player like Apple TV if you prefer that.

I’m surprised the Apple didn’t do 4K/120Hz/HDR/MiniLED for the Studio Display, but I suppose it was cheaper to just use the display from the iMac. Either that or they’re saving those features for the next ProDisplay XDR.

@chidorirasenganz interesting, thanks for the input!

    • chidorirasenganz
      chidorirasenganz

@RetroDestroyer 8k wouldn’t be more crisp because to maintain the PPI of around ~220, Apple would increase the screen size to 40in. The Studio Display is a content creation screen not a content consumption one. With 5k you can see the content at 4k while still having room for UI elements. On a 4k screen you’d have to display content smaller than 4k unless you don’t mind not making changes in realtime due to the lack of viewable UI elements.

    • RetroDestroyer
      RetroDestroyer

@chidorirasenganz I mean at that point, even 8k is more crisp Won't "MOST" creators prefer 4k as that's like a standard resolution among creators? I am just gaining knowledge here :D I hope I am wrong. Hope they don't release dumb products like the studio display again

    • chidorirasenganz
      chidorirasenganz

@RetroDestroyer As far as price I’m hoping for 4k with the stand but that might be hoping for too much lol

    • chidorirasenganz
      chidorirasenganz

@RetroDestroyer It allows for 2x scaling from 1440p so the UI elements are incredibly crisp. 5k is 50% more pixels than 4k so it makes a huge difference. Also all of Apple’s mac screens are at least 218 PPI so a display at 27in would have to be 6k. Hence why the pro display is 6k at 32in. This ensures you have a consistent experience across devices.

I actually looked at this from Samsung, but I didn't bother getting it because the refresh rate (at the time) was 60Hz, which didn't work for me as a work from home employee / gamer. I think this and some of the other compromises you mentioned are because this is actually a very good value in terms of price / features for most users. If you just need to plug in a MacBook or USB-C enabled notebook, and aren't a FPS / high sweat genre gamer, this is truly going to meet nearly all your needs for a workspace / bedroom monitor / TV for those of us that have our desks within hopping distance of the bed lol.

    • Sheepy
      Sheepy

@Matt McGregor Dev work makes sense then, absolutely see the need for multiple monitors there. I guess what needs to be said is that a high workload doesn't necessitate multiple monitors, but the type of work might.

    • Sheepy
      Sheepy

@Postman I run multiple buildings with a handheld laptop that I only occasionally dock. If you can't work with one screen then I just think you're inefficient. My particular laptop does actually have a KVM built in too, but okay. Edit: I use a GPD Pocket 3 in case anybody asks.

    • Postman
      Postman

@Sheepy KVM switch on one 17" console for a rack? One laptop to manage an entire campus network? Sure. Unfortunately certain workloads just don't lend itself as nicely with just desktop switching and hotkeys. Film editing and trading are two that I can think of that improves productivity and quality of life drastically when you have multiple displays.

    • Matt McGregor
      Matt McGregor

@Sheepy you are correct. I don’t use them, but there are many dev activities that require multiple monitors for simultaneous viewing. Even Ctrl tab could be used as view change, but some activities don’t quite work with that or desktops.

@Jack Salem i never said there is one, just saying that having high refresh rate doesnt make it a gaming monitor...so it's like, why settle down on 60hz? because it's about the experience of using the whole display itself..not just gaming...and oh...i wonder why u said there is also no professional monitor that was pre calibrated. There are tons of them. Professional creator and editor needs accurate color calibration to do their works..

@Jack Salem high refresh rate isn't just for gaming. When in Unreal or using stuff like 3DS Max the faster framerate makes things smoother. Plus isn't the idea of this monitor to save space so catering to both would make sense.... DUUUUUUUUUUUUUH

Hey Im wondering whats wrong with macOS and 4K displays? Ive been planning on getting an external display and 4K was on the top of my list.

    • Daniel
      Daniel

@Juke Luke Like with many questions regarding such topics, there is no general best option. I myself still use a 1080p 144hz monitor because it is enough for me and your best choice depends on your intentions. If you wish to primarily watch movies or game, this impacts you much less than daily work in office 365 or programming. Also depends on you not minding the scaling issue when you have the monitor yourself (ofc sending it back then is still an option). As a general approach, I would honestly just go for the 4K and see for myself how bad it is - worst case sending it back and looking for a 5K or maybe some 2k mac scaling compatible choice

    • Juke Luke
      Juke Luke

@Daniel makes sense. I watched that other commenter video and that video showed exactly what you are talking about. You think 4K with weird macOS scaling is still better than a 1080p monitor right?

    • Daniel
      Daniel

Unfortunately I'm absolutely not into Apple products and as such can only give you a cursory answer that I kind of snatched up in the last few videos of the Apple Studio Display. The main issue with 4K is that Apple is scaling differently than linux/windows. I cannot give you the details, but it uses a weird custom scaling that perfectly fits with 5K display resolution but makes e.g. text on a 4K display look slighty unsharp/fuzzy around the edges of characters. I can only presume this to be the mentioned problem but this might be enough to google for more details

Awesome ID but I would much, much prefer they ditched the processor and software running the Tizen garbage and used the savings to fit a higher refresh rate panel. It'd be an instant but for me. But no HDR, stupid "smart" features I really dislike even on a TV, and 60Hz are just too many downsides to make it worth it. I know there are a lot of comparisons to the Studio Display and how this looks similar but at a fraction of the price but it's definitely not as good a monitor

My guess is he means a 1920x1080p monitor screen with MacOS makes some words and app icons looks blurry at 1920x1080p on MacOS. I switch from my 1080p 144hz Monitor to a 1440p 60hz monitor for my Mac Mini and everything looks so much better and clear. I owned many computers before and 1080p resolution looks perfectly okay for Windows computer or Chromebook computer but not on MacOS for some reason, some things look a little blurry. Just a guess from my opinion.

Yeah, that’s fair. I feel like that would increase the price by a good amount though, to make up for testing and certification on the hardware to handle it, and $700 as-is seems a little high.

I got the M7 predecessor to this - Samsung had discounted it and also had a cashback to clear stocks ready for the M8, so I got it for £187 ($244 inc tax). At that price, the M7 was well worth it just for being a 32" 4K monitor. After trying them out once (the built-in Office stuff was horribly laggy/slow and it had a Teams icon that told you it does nothing and you have to run Teams on your PC instead - ridiculous, but maybe they fixed that in the M8, especially now there's a webcam included), I don't even bother using any of the smart features because I have a Linux desktop attached. I did do the initial setup in my kitchen with nothing attached for the lolz and I do use the remote control to turn it off and on, but that's it. Every monitor, dumb or smart, should have a remote control in addition to onboard controls - it makes monitor UI navigation so much more convenient. One thing that the M7 suffered from was being a rather dark display (I believe this has been improved with the M8), but I found the right M7 settings to boost the brightness to a reasonable level (no, it's not just increasing the brightness to 50 [yep, 50 is the max, not 100]). The M8? Well, the $729 price is frankly ludicrous - three times the price of my M7! I like the M8 webcam (but I have a good Logitech USB 1080p webcam attached to my Linux PC already), but very little else seems to have improved over the M7. In fact, the M8 is available in 4 colours, none of which are the M7's black (all my kit is black and I suspect I'm not the only one) - it's very dumb of Samsung to not offer the M8 in black. Conclusion: M8 is a nice monitor but massively overpriced and not a big enough advance over the M7 to justify its price or even its existence. It's made me even happier that I got the M7 so cheap (trying to find a sub-£200 32" 4K dumb monitor in the UK is impossible, let alone a smart one).

Just got one of the new Samsung 4K g7 gaming monitors (not the curved 2k ones with the same dumb name) and this has a lot of features I wish were on that. Obviously for gaming the g7 is going to be better but speakers and a webcam and a better stand and cable management would have been preferable to the rgb. As much as I do kinda like the rgb.

I have to say, since I've been using bluetooth speakers (no space for actual shelf speakers, or too lazy to make space). I don't think I'd ever accept any basic monitor or laptop speaker anymore, the extra bass a simple bt speaker can add makes a huge difference even when watching podcasts, shows or other basic audio stuff. Prime example would be listening to Markiplier talk on Distractables with and without speakers with bass, is a huge difference.

Watching this and me looking at my 12years old LG M227WA monitor TV, still working. I can say that this monitor suck a lot in term of IO as a TV. My 12yold boi have all the IO at that time to support both TV and monitor like HDMI, DVI, VGA, Component, heck the monitor even have an antenna for analog TV signal =)). I used to work on my PC with this monitor and hook up with a PS3 for gaming. I lived in a very small room at the time. I can sit like 3 feet away just like a normal PC monitor. You cant do that with a TV, the DPI will destroy your eyes. Most smart TV can do this with lots and lots of IO options and port in which you can hook up with tons of other devices. Laptop to TV without cable can be done with wireless display feature. I dun care much about the software since as a monitor hooking up with a PC/Laptop, they are way smarter than the TV tiny processor :D. This thing is not bad, but the IO option man :(.
