if anything I want MORE HOSTS on shortcircuit! the quick back and forth stating almost bulletpoints of product made it so much fun than solo monologue!
Maybe worth trying one off but it has to be natural
More Horsts! I mean, hosts!
Feels like kids playing with the tablet on the store shelf, LOVE IT!
Yes! More banter!
ngl when random cameos happen on set, it increases my amusement factor by a quite a bit.The dynamics and interactions between everyone is just so fun. I feel like working at Linus Media Group is a blast and is another reason why I wish lived in Canada. I'm not saying to force these events, but honestly let them keep happening.
The way they force it on tech linked isn’t very good
I feel that, as others previously mentioned, DeX should have beed discussed as a main feature of this tablet. Most people can use this tablet for most of their computing needs (within reason) thanks to this feature.
What is dex
@Ilich Garcia I've used a surface pro x. It does not run a limited version of windows. It's arm. It emulates x86 windows apps when needed. I know, you don't. You must mean the 2013 arm surface. Teachers here walk around too when teaching. But the laptop stays at the desk, when they need to show the class something different they walk to the desk or podium and change the content, and go walk around again. The surface x was released because they need testing of devices thst are arm running windows. What limited version of windows does it run bud? It runs full windows 10 pro 64 bit. Runs windows 11 too, ran it at the launch of windows 11. For basic apps, no emulation is needed. Web browser things, Microsoft store apps, Microsoft office apps, all arm. Chromebooks exist for most web browser tasks. They also suck, they suck at browsing the web and if you want something that does it well, it's a class of device that wouldn't have an issue running windows anyways, so you are paying for functionality you can't use. Chromebooks are devices for kids, schools, and old people. Their workloads are super basic. Everyone else needs a real laptop. The versatility allows you to do anything. Hell you could install chrome os if you wanted. For a normal user you are bound to find a limit to what chrome os can do and you can't do a diddly damn thing about it without buying a whole new device. With a windows laptop you can do anything. Even if you won't do anything, you have the option if you ever wanted to. Chromebooks get away with the battery life because they use cpus that oems buy for 5$ because they are 5 years old and bottom of the barrel when they were RELEASED. Don't buy a high power device and you will get good battery life. Your combining about your wife's battery life when she has a gaming laptop. Get a normal laptop. A gaming laptop is not just a faster normal laptop. It's a different class of device for different people. Don't complain about how a device does its job when you bought the wrong device in the damn first place. Can't complain your scooter ain't winning races when the car your looking for is a Lamborghini. Wrong item for the job. You seem to like to talk a lot about things you don't know about.
@Raycert07 channel Teachers in the US stay at their desks. Teacjers from otjer countries move around while the kids stay in the same classroom. Just to clarify, I love PCs, I have a 3000 USD laptop and a 2500 USD desktop, but for work, I could also use a DEX device such as the Tab S8 Ultra due to, as stated earlier, the superior battery life. There's a reason why Microsoft released the Surface Pro X with a Qualcomm chip that, surprise surprise, runs a limited version of Windows. Most people can satisy their office software needs while taking advange of the extra battery life. This is tje reason why Chromebooks exist as well. And no, I'm not stigmatizing PCs and I wont be the reason why people go for anything other than a PC, most people simply don't need one for their use case. Imagine being able to get to the end of your shift with half your battery and then get home to check your social media amd watch a movie before going to bed without having to charge your device every couple of hours? THAT'S why you get a Tab S8 Ultra, for the average person. There is no need to buy an iPad and a Laptop/PC for the average person if a single device can satisfy those needs. If you took offemse on my last reaponse, I'm sorry, but remember that the averahe Joe has no need for a PC and Chromebooks and DEX devices is proof of this new trend. The PC market will never die and it is unlikely to stop growing soon, but you gotta remember that technology is not static and some solutions may replace others as it is often the case.
@Ilich Garcia that's a stigma. Most people don't just use pcs for work or gaming. Stop trying to make out pcs to be some outrageous expensive device for only the top 0.1% of enthusiasts. They are devices for end users. Stop trying to kill the pc boom of the 21st century by stigmatizing pcs as specialized devices. Teachers mostly stay at their desk. Plug in the damn laptop/tablet at your desk. They mostly use projectors which means laptop at desk, plugged in to an adapter that goes into the projector. Easily able to charge at the same time. Find a plug. Its not some fancy ass job that requires anything special.
@Raycert07 channel There is a compromise and it's the battery life. And again, most people can do most things on a DEX device. Case in point, my wife is a high school teacher and she uses mostly Google docs, Microsoft Office, and web browser, she also doesn't have the luxury of time to charge her phone or laptop every couple of hours. A surface would need to be charged at least once during her shift regardless of power saving settings because of the screen brightness she needs in a school environment. Everyone should remember that most PC users use them for work amd gamers that require high performance devices are a minority. She has a Lenovo Legion 5 with a 4800H amd a GTX 1660 Ti and she still prefers DEX for work because of the battery times.
Not gonna lie, I LOVED the "discussion" feel of this episode. Two people talking to each other makes it much more lively
Yes, I agree so much. Especially on such a device.
Honestly I love when other people come in to check things out and comment and nit pick them. It gives off a great studio vibe and it's really nice to have the extra opinions.
Now, try the DeX mode on it. Yes you can run DeX right from the Tab S8 Ultra. That changes the whole game on what a tablet should be 🙂
I'm always on Dex mode!
they won't cause that'll compete with apple ipad
@Crawdaddy Well sure, each to their own, I carry both Tbh, the thing is with DEX is it simply allows you to use your tablet in a more desktop style environment, instantly switchable, should you need it....use it or don't it's up to you but it's a nice option to have. It's also nice to be able to use the tablet as a second wireless screen for your laptop, they don't mention that either though.
@Phoenix Fieryn it's so you can use the tablet in an desktop style more with multiple windows ect, it helps with productivity more than anything when you are away from your main PC or laptop. Do you need it, probably not no, but it's a nice to have option.
@Hawk well you can still use wireless display if you want, but what's the point of using it on a pc? The point of DEX is to give a desktop experience on the tablet so you don't need to use a pc
This was the best episode of short circuit in a while, I loved the pure chaos of having multiple host argue almost bullet points and you guys at LMG should make more videos of people on opposite sides (like iPad users and Android tablet user like in this video)
Honestly, I really like the random interruptions and other people invading the set. Made the video way more interesting, and the curiosity with the tablet from others made me more curious myself.
Placement of the S-pen on the back I would imagine is a durability decision. Also, a smooth glass surface of the glass against the pen, will decrease the possible cosmetic damage to the tablet and pen. My Apple Pencil is being chewed apart, and has left scratches in the frame. Which, not a big deal honestly. I could… have made it worse by turning the pencil on the side of my iPad into a fidget spinner. How many times can you spin the pencil before it falls off! Skills…. Skills.
I'm actually potentially interested, can we get a deep dive on this tablet series? Since I'm not into the Apples a tablet hasn't been on the table in a long time but this might change that. I will also admit I haven't looked at Android tablets in years, is there anything on a similar level to this that isn't Apple or Samsung? Things I would want to know for the review: - How is the battery life? I potentially want to use this for college. - How well does the desktop mode work? - How is reading text for a good amount of time? Like reading an e-book for an hour. Does the oled just burn your soul with its brightness or does it burn through your battery? On a side note, I really like Johnathan is giving Android a serious shot. I know it won't make him switch as Apple does genuinly have many advantages but so does Android, especially when it comes to customization and personalization. That has always been the main reason I was unable to switch to Apple. I have some many small things I do in a specific way because they work for me and Apple's way often just does not gel with me. That and some of the silly limitations of certain apps/base functions. Like, yeah I get you market privacy but if I want to record my calls, something that has saved my butt on several occasions when talking with businesses, I don't want my only option to be connecting my call to some random persons external service so they can mail me the sound file. That is objectively dumb and very insecure. Anyways, that's a tangent :P If Apple let users customize just a bit more I would switch in a heartbeat. I don't want to be tethered to Google. It's bad enough that IRglo is the only video platform that is worth using.
Here in Europe the 5G version of the S8 Ultra is available 👍 Also the DeX, desktop mode is great. You should give it a shot :)
yep, 7:14 it even showed
@Typhoon_808 Definitely. That’s one of the reasons why I would pretty much only spend that much money on an iPad Pro and not an Android tablet.
@Caden Churchill your IPad Pro probably will last longer than the Tab S8 Ultra, especially since Samsung only offers a portion of the Full Performance of the SnapDragon 8 Gen 1.
@Mireaze especially now that the iPads are running M1
I was about to say that my S8 ultra has 5G
This was a great video! Riley and Johnathan together remind me of the old Mac VS. PC commercials, but more fun due to the unscripted chemistry both hosts have. More please
I always appreciate when Riley or other hosts call out how ridiculous the pricing of these devices has gotten.
I love that Jonthan interrupting feels like a crossover, funny but it’s really refreshing how they get to compare android and iOS things.
This has to be one of my favorite ShortCircuit videos... Horst's disdain when Riley said, "Oh, are you switching to Android permanently?" was fall out of my chair level hilarious. Love it!
5G is an option for the Ultra and if you want a desktop experience, practically every Samsung phone and tablet comes with Dex nowadays. Kinda disappointed that there was a whole "tablet as a computer" discussion without showing Dex.
They literally don't know about it. They did no research for this video
@Datachu see the reason Apple products and the company is as bad as it is, is because of Jobs. His "innovation" was finding new ways to restrict the use of the device, closing it off to the owner, making it so you dont truly own your device and charging absurd prices for products that arnt any better then the competition. (The Apple tax) Maybe at a point they where good but that hasn't been the case for a loooong time. He was a good sells men he was charismatic in front of the camera, BUT an asshole when the camera wasn't on him, and you can see that same facade with the every CEO after him and its the same facade that Apple puts on everything they make.
@icephoenix1088 Yeah I know what you mean. Apple is a pop culture icon still even though I feel like the innovation and everything Steve Jobs (and certainly Steve Wozniak, believer in open source and the ability to tinker and customize) represented has basically dissipated. I still see apple products being the default in movies and marketing material, with that ugly notch I can't imagine why you'd want to show off your phone app like that. And damn, every time I see a "hacker" movie/show where they quote on quote "hack stuff" using a Macbook or an iPhone, I cringe so hard. As if you can even do that, and as if any real hacker would trust a product that records everything you do and ships it off straight to Apple HQ along with your exact location, even if you disable Find My.
@IrreverantRex but it is with a simple switch
5g is not an option on the ultra in North America
I love the square edge design. I wish they do it on their phones as well.
*Love the **Newest.Technology** device, I also bought a 8" size too. Works great. I use it for apps mainly, streaming SXM and Netflix it, does a great job. Thin and light and we take it when we travel.*
This is way too epic! Many hosts went into conversation and gentle swearing! I really enjoyed it! :)
To be fair. The S6 was a GREAT tablet. The S7+ was till recently one of the best tablets on the market with THE best screen on any tablet. Android has really been advancing mostly thanks to Samsung over the last 2-3 years. As an artist I love the flexibility my S7+ gives. I always saw Procreate as too limiting.
@Jack0217 bruh the oled is way better
I managed to pick up an open-box S7+ ($850 variant) for $370 because it was missing the pen and charger (both of which I have). I also picked up the tablet-sized S Pen on Amazon for $20 just to "complete the package."
@Michael Rooplall Infinite Painter, it's $10
@Jack0217 who lied to you. Mini led can't replace OLED. It's just brighter
@Jack0217 As long as you're not in a dark area
I really only use my lapttop for media consumption so this is literally perfect....especially for flying. Seems a bit obnoxious but I bet it's awesome
the realtime first impressions adds to this channel so much. was hilarious when Linus did it for the mac Studio
Thank you for including all the chaotic energy and side tangents in this video. Jono throwing bananas at Horst to get him off the set was hilarious!
12:18 You can configure this under "advanced features". You can also show the finger print reader position at all times with the always on display. Then you can unlock it directly with your fingerprint.
No, don’t kick them out Jono! 😂 I love it when Horst joins the set because I love having the contrasting ideas between Apple and Android/PC. ( you also get to see how apple products work with other non apple products)
@David E Unfortunately, most small phones these days are ultra-budget ones. I'm rocking an xperia these days and couldn't be happier if not for the size/shape; if it was half an inch shorter that'd be just perfect. Really, I could remember 4 acquaintances of mine from the top of my head who got an iphone SE in the past 5 years or so purely because it was the only small and powerful phone available. Realistically, Samsung probably doesn't care about those customers as they're not likely to buy a new phone after just an year or two, but these customers still opt for Apple.
@MrLodinn There's plenty of alternatives to not just Apple but Samsung too.
They should actually make a fight android x iOS
That was the best part of the show, and Jono ruined it.😂
Horst is lowkey the most knowledgeable and interested in mobile experiences in general, he's the only one who knew how to get into nav bar customization and it sounded like he was actually exploring Samsung customization. I honestly wish he wasn't so heavily apple biased (although at least he doesn't hide it) because I think he could be a great non-apple mobile hardware reviewer.
I regularly rock a Tab S7 and almost all my friends are very impressed by it. Samsung tablets are good.
I have been using the S7+ for a year, its been great for me. i use it for textbook reading and media consume. While travelling i used it as a laptop alternative with the keyboard cover, it did the job well
8:51 I do often find that people who come over from iPhone to Android have complaints, and they don't realize most of what they don't like can be changed from factory. In my limited experience with iOS stuff, Apple doesn't seem to give the same kinda of control I guess?
This is the most catastrophic episode of ShortCircuit, and I'm loving it!
I bought a Tab S7+ last year. I was nervous that I'd bought too soon. I don't think I did, actually. Doesn't look like there's a very compelling reason to go S8 unless you really want the giant screen
I have the Tab S7+ and the thing is freaking awesome. I love it. The only reason you should care about it being any better than it already is, is if you're a graphic artist. If you need the absolute best in color accuracy and pen support, then frankly, you really shouldn't be using a tablet anyway(get a PC or laptop for that), but that's literally the only thing an ipad pro has over even the Tab S7, much less the S8. Every other "advantage" the iPad pro has is absolutely superfluous to 99% of people, even if they don't want to admit it.
As an Android user I agree that tablets have been weak. I recently purchased the S8 ultra, 512GB with the 16GG RAM and I love it. So fast, games play great and the display is the best. Cameras, ehhh. Not impressed but slightly better than what I expected. The S-Pen btw also magnetizes on the top of the tablet when in landscape mode
"THANK YOU! THANK YOU! IM OUT!" got me :D Thanks to all smartphone manufacturers... I'm also actually at a iPhone 12 mini... the last "small" phone, next to the 2016 iPhone SE (which I had until the 12 Mini...)
I was screaming "turn on dex" as they are talking about if it is usable as a PC replacement. I have been using my Tab S6 for almost all of my day to day tasks since 2020.
And claiming it doesn't have 5G when it does
5 seconds into the video and tittle i knew these clowns were apple fan boys and it would be a horrible review
LOVE Dex, its a game changer.
thank you for this comment, wasn't too happy with the review
Me too, I really felt like they phoned this one in.
Watching this from my s7+ tablet and while I would love a huge size like the Ultra, I'm going to try and wait for the next-generation because of the notch and the s7 is still perfect. Highly recommend it.
I'm pretty sure it does have double tap to wake and lift to wake, it just has to be turned on in the options menu. I have the predecessor (S7 plus), and it supports both. Also, considering the cover for $70, the price is actually pretty good for an original Samsung cover (apple as well), especially with that nice kick stand. If you look up the price for the keyboard cover then you've got a reason to complain; the price for this one seems alright to me.
What I was waiting for is a good OLED tablet. I love sitting with tablets on my porch or in buses/trains but whenever sun hits your ips lcd even on full brightness you can't see nothing and buying ipad pro just to fix this issue was madness for me. I'm glad that Samsung made OLED tablet but I still hate their version of Android and would install aosp
I was actually considering looking for a new tablet recently, this was on my list as a potential tablet/laptop replacement for portable use. But the lack of data on the highest end definitely excludes it from the list now. I would much rather stay away from apple and save some money/have the freedom to freely customize my device/have easy windows cross functionality. Guess I'll be looking at the Plus next for a portable tablet replacement since the lower end one also doesn't have data for some reason... As well as various other android tablets out there.
Check your region! I have 5G on mine
I'm glad that shortcircuit has been getting more casual. The interruptions are the best part of these!
I use the s7+ as my main university laptop. With an external screen, and a bluetooth mouse and keyboard, it works as a charm. It has great flexibility and great battery life
At least there's expandable storage on these too. Something that I expected them to take away like they did with the phones lol
watching this video on an s8+ in dex mode ... dex is great I hope more engineering will be put in this thing . not to mention if you have a samsung phone you can use the tab to call directly without touching the phone. you can use your data plan from the phone and so many other things . that's why I choosed this tablet over the ipad(had 2 in the past )
I know it's been mentioned in the comments a ton of times, but at least a mention of dex would've been nice, because after using dex it really changes your view on the capabilities of android tablets
This was frustratingly irritating to watch. Like how dense can one be! And how can hosts of such a popular channel be this dense!
Dex is only for Samsung products but on the other hand you have native mouse and keyboard support for Android in general so that's a massive plus for computer alternative purposes
10:43 he has a huge point. I want a modern small android device the size of 3.5 inch would switch it for any phones in existence
10:43 Unihertz Jelly Bean 1 and 2. Particulary the 2, make for great pocket media devices (MP-everything player, including streaming services). And with the right setup, even use it on TVs, in the car, etc.
I am on this wagon at Galaxy Tab S6. It works very well. and almost functions as a mini transformable laptops. I am aware iPad always has the better SOC, but I haven't done anything more demanding than the snapdragon 855 can deal with.
I love these impromptu interrupts by others. It's more authentic and they always seem to have a different and unscripted response giving unique insight. I love what Mr. MacAddress has to say and his input. Definitely one of my favorite ShortCircuit videos.
Love how it turned into a multiple hosts thing. Need more of em.
Samsung devices also work really well alongside Windows 10/11, besides Dex which is a great feature, you can also answer calls, messages etc right from Windows.
I LOVE my tab s8 ultra. I bought it specifically because it is large. So great!! Dex is great also. I will say the keyboard book cover is fantastic and way over priced.
Since the LG G2, I always assume devices turn on with double tapping. It's so convenient and intuitive and I do not understand why not add it to your device
With this tablet I would love to see Sarah compare the Ipad to it for drawing and content creation
I was sad that this video ended without reviewing DeX, the most important feature that distinguishes this tablet from others...
@Ananya Bajpai it is an unboxing channel and this is the initial impressions video even if you rephrase it however you like its still just as bad.Judge it however you like 😀
@Kickbackbro It's an unboxing video if you know what ShortCircuit is about, kid
The quality of this review was quite bad. Just like someone's grandpa would review this cool device 😂
If he did, he wouldnt put a title as ipad and apple which are hotkeys for ads and views..
It's not a review, but dex and s pen, remain Samsung things that do a thing
Surprised you never mentioned differences that vary by region, for example 5G on the ultra is available in different regions. Also how can you not mention dex, it’s literally a main feature for the tablet which turns it into a fully fledged laptop.
I personally use the S8+ right now, and it's absolutely great. I use it for school too, which works very well. I couldn't bare to have the notch on the ultra.
but if s9 ultra comes without a notch it would be amazing
There's only one thing that will get me to consider switching from iPad - making it double as a monitor making sidecar irrelevant.
You've been able to do that for several years now with windows and probably Mac too with 3rd party software
This had chaotic energy but it was really fun, it gets a lot of impressions squeezed in to one video. Short circuit is a vibe
You didn’ t try the DEX mode. That makes this tablet work like a laptop. Not looking at this option doesn’ t give this tablet the credits it deserves.
